The fellow will work independently on clearly defined tasks and timelines, coordinating primarily with the Vice President and, as needed, with other board members and committee chairs.

This position is ideal for TESOL graduate students interested in gaining hands-on experience with professional associations, nonprofit operations, and networking in the field.

The Executive Director (ED) serves as a member of the senior leadership team within the Mayor’s Office of Education, reporting to the Deputy Chief Education Officer. Please see the attached flyer for our upcoming, FREE home health aide/ESL program. Students will study with an RN instructor and an ESL instructor to study core healthcare skills, caretaking skills, nursing career pathways, and medical/caregiving English for free with on-site, hands-on instruction. The course is scheduled from September 23 - December 20.

To participate, students must:

Score an NRS level 6 on CASAS Life and Work or Reading STEPS exam (we will administer if the student does not have a valid test for this program year)
Attend a short pre-session of regular ESL class in our IELCE program
Have a social security card and state ID
Get a physical and two-step PPD test as part of the enrollment process (some previous PPD tests may be acceptable, contact for further information)
Commit to the full schedule of training

Students will receive:

Textbook and workbook
Stethoscope and blood pressure kit
One set of scrubs

Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a certificate they can use to apply for home health aide jobs right away, and we will also hold job fairs regularly to connect students with employers.

The Assistant Director/Language Learning Services develops and manages a suite of academic support services aimed at supporting language learners, including:

a Conversation Partners program
tutoring for writing and reading in the target languages
a program of in-center workshops related to language and communication
weekly language tables for ongoing language practice

This person takes primary responsibility for recruiting, hiring, developing and evaluating a group of approximately 20 graduate and undergraduate students who work in these programs. The incumbent also oversees daily operations for these programs, making work schedules, establishing policies and procedures, designing instructional materials, and so forth. The AD/LLS also contributes to a variety of SSC-wide projects, programs and activities.

In collaboration with key stakeholders at the university, the Assistant Director works to develop a fair and supportive environment for language-learners at Temple University. The Assistant Director seeks to identify and remove barriers to success for English language learners, and advocates for English language learners and students who speak diverse forms of English.

The AD serves as a resource for university-wide projects where expertise in language learning is required. In this capacity, the incumbent serves on a variety of committees and project teams outside of the SSC and contributes to efforts to improve the experiences and outcomes of language learners and international students who enroll at Temple.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence. This includes overseeing implementation of programspursuant to organizational strategic plan goals, including managing timelines and resources needed to achieve program and organizational goals and developing and managing systems to meet funder outcome goals
Ensuring work readiness programming is accessible to all potential participants and strategically ensuring that language accessibility it not a barrier to appropriate program participation
Lead and support the development of external partnerships that further the mission and goals of the organization as it relates to work readiness. This includes being attuned to organizational relationships with the corporate community to discern workforce needs and occupational requirements. Working across the organization, oversee Employer Engagement Coordinator to ensure a holistic approach towards employer engagement that includes volunteer opportunities, corporate philanthropy and leveraging communication opportunities.
Lead staff through developing annual programmatic goals and the commensurate Workforce Development division budget, including operating budget for programming; Regular review and approval of programming expenditures.
Use data to drive decisions and encourage staff to use data to drive decisions; monitor and improve performance to achieve intended program outcomes.
Ensure organizational compliance with relevant governmental and grant-funder regulations.
Oversee and aid in the development of staff of each workforce development program as they balance providing individualized participant support and broader program planning, delivery and evaluation. Provide oversight and feedback to encourage staff to work toward personal and program goals.
Liaise with the Development and Communication team in efforts to provide relevant programming information to be used for external audiences, fundraising, participant outreach, and all aspects of stakeholder engagement.
Collaborate closely with the Director of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to ensure that all jobseekers coming through Welcoming Center programming are supported with job placement assistance and wrap around participant support services.
Collaborate closely with the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of English for Speakers of Other Languages, and Director for Strategy and Evaluation, to ensure that program design, content and delivery are aligned with organizational standards and continue to support an internal culture of learning and innovation. Ensure that data collection and evaluation of all programs that is consistent and ongoing.
Collaborate closely with Director of Community Leadership to ensure all alumni engagement and participant feedback activities in the Workforce Division align with best practices, core values, and the organization’s mission.
Pursue learning activities and opportunities to stay current in understanding the workforce development landscape in the region and how the Work Readiness division of the organization fits into and responds to it.
Invest time and energy in learning about workforce development best practices – especially regarding adults, ELLs, and immigrants. Provide opportunity for sharing that knowledge with staff and direct reports.
Identify opportunities for: institutional partnership or collaboration; philanthropic and governmental support; and policy advocacy; and pursue such opportunities upon consultation with leadership.

We are excited to announce the 2024 American Language Program (ALP) Winter Conference at Columbia University. This year’s conference theme is Language Learning & Technology: Innovations/Implications.

Larissa Goulart, an Assistant Professor of Linguistics at Montclair State University, will deliver the plenary speech, titled "Analyzing Language Data, Empowering Teachers: A Corpus Linguistics Approach to Pedagogical Material Development." Larissa’s research

focuses on using corpus linguistics tools to analyze the linguistic characteristics of undergraduate student writing. Before becoming a professor, she taught English writing classes at Northern Arizona University and in her home country of Brazil.

This year’s conference will be held in person on Saturday, February 17, 2024, from 9:45 AM to 3:00 PM at Columbia University’s Faculty House.

Now in its tenth year, the conference is a one-day professional development event for TESOL educators, researchers, and graduate and doctoral students and is aimed at facilitating the sharing of innovative ideas and the enrichment of pedagogical practice. We welcome proposals from colleagues in the New York area.

We invite you to submit proposals that focus on either practical approaches and techniques or research-informed presentations about language learning and its relationship with technology. Presentations, including time for Q&A, will be 30 minutes long.

Proposals will be evaluated based on:

• Novelty of approach

• Significance to the field

OVERVIEW
Part Time ESL Instructors are responsible for the planning and delivery of ESL classes within the curriculum of the intensive English language program (IELP). Instructors are expected to plan lessons, activities, homework, and formative assessments for the entire session. The IELP curriculum provides course objectives, textbooks, and end-of-level assessment, but teachers have a lot of autonomy in lesson planning and curriculum implementation. Regular, timely, reporting on attendance, student performance, and some other administrative functions are essential to this position.

Approximate Breakdown of Duties
70% classroom instruction
20% preparation, assessment, curriculum
10% meetings and administration

COMPENSATION
This is a part-time, contract position. Starting rate:
$46/hour with Master’s
$50/hour with Ph.D.
30% of preparation time is paid for each hour of teaching.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must hold a master’s degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, or a closely related field, and two years’ experience teaching English to adults;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
Demonstrated knowledge of language teaching methodology and assessment practices;
- Demonstrated ability to work with a highly diverse population;
- Ability to work legally in the US.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience teaching abroad and experience in university-based intensive English programs;
- Experience developing materials and assessments in academic English programs;
- Fluency in additional languages;
- Experience with Canvas, Microsoft Teams, and educational technology.

SCHEDULE
Specific schedules can vary from session to session, but it is common for instructors to teach one or two classes per 7-week session, each of which is from 4 to 6 hours of teaching per week.

Corpus linguistics has had a profound impact on L2 English language instruction in terms of available resources and the design of syllabi (i.e., indirect), as well as in terms of pedagogical activities and tasks themselves (i.e., direct; Leech, 1997). A robust body of scholarship supports the adoption of corpus-based language learning tasks in L2 English instruction, with particular emphasis on L2 writing and vocabulary development, learner perception data, and the Data-Driven Learning approach (Johns, 1990). However, attention to reading, listening, speaking, pragmatic knowledge, and other areas (e.g., use of learner-compiled corpora; integration of corpus-analysis activities with other pedagogical activities) is comparatively limited. Currently, there is room for more research investigating how corpus-based pedagogies impact learner development from quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches that look for changes in production, metacognition, identity, and other areas of communicative competence.

One of two TESOL Quarterly 2024 Special Issues, Assessing the effectiveness of corpus-based approaches to English language teaching aims to address such matters. Submissions to this special issue should be both theoretically grounded and rooted in practice with a strong emphasis on analyzing the impacts of the pedagogical activities on L2 English learner development. Preference will be given to submissions which focus on less commonly taught skills, linguistic features, and innovative corpus-based pedagogies through rigorous means of assessing development. Submissions should clearly motivate and outline the corpus-based pedagogical approach adopted, theoretically motivate the operationalization of development, provide careful and robust analysis of learner data, and include implications which may be generalizable to other English language instruction contexts.

For the special issue, we are accepting submissions for Full-Length Articles, Brief Reports, Research Issues, and Teaching Issues. Those interested in potentially contributing to the special issue should email the following information to both guest editors by January 31, 2023: a) the intended manuscript submission type/section, b) a title, c) an abstract of up to 300 words; and d) author bios (150 words max each) with contact information of the authors. Introduction

Assessment in the learner-centered context is used to diagnose learning issues, progress, in addition to evaluating learning outcomes (Irvine, 1998; Huba & Freed, 2000). The advancement of digital tools has enabled the development of online language assessment, exams, evaluation and feedback. Nonetheless, the language assessment literacy required of a teacher today is of a completely different kind — one that is adapted to the digital environment and altered for the pedagogical approaches of our new norm. The spread of the pandemic also spread panic and despair as teachers, school principals/managers and administrators were caught off-guard when Covid-19 prompted the abrupt change in learning activities and evaluation of students’ achievements, from face-to-face into online distance learning. There is a scarcity of literature addressing the challenges of the in-person to online assessment, exams, evaluation and feedback, in the time of the COVID-19 education crisis, which was the main motivation for this edited volume. The book looks at the main challenges of online language assessment when migrating from an in-class to an online environment due to the, namely, academic integrity, adaptation to the new testing environment, technical problems and anxiety. The research-based chapters display real-world experiences, display practical examples of the academic field of language assessment and testing, and restate the commitment to academic quality.

Introduction

English language programs depend on effective assessment to measure student proficiency for purposes of placement, advancement, and completion. The goal of this volume is to provide a resource for teachers and administrators in the area of assessment practices and processes. The volume seeks to explore possible approaches, models, principles, and techniques related to effective assessment at the classroom and program levels. It will reflect current theory, address the topic of assessment and accountability movements within the context of English language learning, and be of practical value to classroom teachers, administrators, and teacher educators. Assessment is one of the main, albeit, not the most popular components of English Language Programs. This is true from the perspectives of both teachers and learners. Assessment fulfills important school requirements in many areas of English language teaching, whether English as a foreign language, as a second language, or for academic purposes. There are many different ways to assess learners, and the more a teacher is familiar with, the better this aspect can be integrated into English lessons. This applies to all learners, yet it is especially important for language minority learners. These learners are often unfamiliar with testing methods used in countries other than those from which they originate, and they are often incapable of displaying their complete abilities during one session.

Target Audience

The audience for this volume is primarily classroom teachers and administrators in English language programs within higher education, private language schools, and other contexts. The book would also be of value in teacher education programs to train pre-service teachers in effective assessment techniques and increase awareness of current issues.

Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before November 9, 2022, a chapter proposal of 1,000 to 2,000 words clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors will be notified by November 23, 2022 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines.Full chapters are expected to be submitted by March 9, 2023, and all interested authors must consult the guidelines for manuscript submissions at https://www.igi-global.com/publish/contributor-resources/before-you-write/ prior to submission. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.

Note: There are no submission or acceptance fees for manuscripts submitted to this book publication, Global Perspectives on Effective Assessment in English Language Teaching. All manuscripts are accepted based on a double-blind peer review editorial process.
