by Stephanie Johnson | 01/07/2022 7 January 2022 (Alexandria, VA) – TESOL International Association (TESOL) is pleased to announce Meg Eubank as the recipient of the 2022 TESOL Teacher of the Year Award. The award, presented by National Geographic Learning, honors exceptional English language teaching at all levels. Eubank will be recognized in Pittsburgh, PA, during the hybrid 2022 TESOL Convention & English Language Expo, 22-25 March. Eubank is currently a professor at Bucks County Community College in Pennsylvania and a doctoral student at the University of Houston. During the pandemic, as she pivoted to a virtual environment, Eubank continued to focus on respecting the diverse needs of students and creating a community of learners. She continues to encourage other teachers who operate in virtual environments to, “Make sure to present information verbally, visually, written, recorded, and in as many ways as possible for students, and implement UDL (universal design for learning) strategies.” With over a decade of experience as a TESOL teacher, Eubank was initially drawn to the profession by a passion for building community among students from across the globe. “It is important to me to choose a diverse curriculum that reflects people from all backgrounds, races, and cultures that is both representative of my students but also introduces new ideas.” She has taught and assisted several thousand students from over 100 countries. In her work with local nonprofits, she has encouraged her diverse group of students “to advocate for themselves and connect with one another, building community and support.” The recipient of the TESOL Teacher of the Year Award receives a one-year membership in TESOL International Association, a selection of TESOL publications valued at $250, a complimentary registration for the 2022 TESOL International Convention & English Language Expo, and a cash award of $1,000. The Teacher of the Year award recipient is also offered a session as an invited speaker at the Annual Convention, where Eubank will deliver a presentation titled “Building Community in an Age of Isolation.” For more information on Eubank, please see the Teacher of the Year feature in the January issue of TESOL Connections.
